Pendulum Clock

The clock pictured below is a fully working Pendulm regulated clock made of LEGO bricks and TECHNIC elements.

The clock is driven by a modern 9v Lego motor that is fed power from a LEGO train power regulator (on power setting 2). The clock's speed is controlled by the pendulum. After about a month of tweaking the clock is accurate within a couple minutes a day. I expect I can get it to under a minute a day.

Most of the workings are heavily based of theoretical design by Leo Dorst.

Plus the work of Amnon Silverstein and his page of other people's Lego Clocks provided many ideas on how one might go about making a clock.


This is an earlier design of the back of the clock body. I decided I didn't like blue and red, and the body needed to be made larger because a redesign of the drive mechanism made the pendulum swing wider.

The large white brick object is the lid to the clock. The clock's top is easily removed, which is neccessary since I need to reset the clock once or twice a week.

Various shots of the completed clock. Alot of time was spent building and rebuilding the body and face of the clock. All told there were probably more than a dozen designs discarded. Getting a pleasing proportion between the head and body of the clock was difficult, especially since my wife had a very different idea of what was pleasing than I did.

A shot of the inside with the top removed. One can set the clock by sliding the left most 8-tooth gear along the axle and then spinning the hands.
